Comments on: How to Dual Boot Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Windows 11 https://www.linuxtechi.com/dual-boot-ubuntu-22-04-and-windows-11/ Wed, 03 May 2023 21:32:21 +0000 hourly 1 By: Henk https://www.linuxtechi.com/dual-boot-ubuntu-22-04-and-windows-11/#comment-52823 Wed, 03 May 2023 21:32:21 +0000 https://www.linuxtechi.com/?p=13886#comment-52823 Why do I need to create so many partitions? Windows 11 is already installed, and therefore I already have the EFI partion which in my case is 290 MB. I expected to add just one root partion of say 60 GB, and a SWAP partion the size of my RAM, which is 8GB. The 2GB in this example seems a bit small.

I also would like to boot default from Windows.

When I do a reboot it only goes to the Windows login. The USB I use has 22.04 on it. It was created with the ordinary Ubuntu program. Does any one have any idea of how I can get further.

Very good point. Something I will remember. On my first dual-boot setup with Win10 and Ubuntu, I sweat blood until I learned about UEFI partitions, I still don’t know what UEFI stands for 🙂

You will run out of space quickly. It should be rather 50 – 60 GB. Most users will install more software and drivers over the years and a too small root partition will cause problems.

Check whether you made the Ubuntu USB with an MBR file system instead of the newer UEFI (efi). The old MBR file systems cannot see a UEFI system and vice versa. The Rufus App lets you choose but may default to the legacy MBR. An Ubuntu installation drive created in MBR mode will not recognize any of the partitions created by Windows, or even that there is an existing operating system. If you proceed with installing Ubuntu you may overwrite Windows so be careful. Better to go back and redo the USB drive since reinstalling Windows is a bit of a pain.

If you are confused about the multiple partitions like boot, var, etc, just choose a particular partition you wish to install the Linux, it will take care of the multiple partitions itself

Do you have to know that number or will the machine fill out the number for you?
