Technical Analysis
The stable 2020 regulations have been welcomed by Haas who struggled to understand the unpredictable behaviour of last year’s VF-19, particularly when it came to tyre performance. However, with minimal changes for 2020 the team has been able to focus on optimising not only the technical details on the VF-20, but their approach too.
‘It’s always exciting to see the development of a new Formula One car and undoubtedly the VF-20 has to deliver where our previous car didn’t,’ says Guenther Steiner, Team Principal at Haas. ‘With the regulations remaining stable into this season, it’s allowed us to improve our understanding of the car and to scrutinize ourselves more in order to find solutions and applications to channel into the design of the VF-20. Last year was definitely a set-back, one I would never have asked for, but you learn from such situations.’
Haas were the first team to give us a glimpse of their 2020 contender, when they released renderings of the VF-20 earlier in February. The physical car will be revealed at 8am on Weds 19th February, kicking off pre-season testing.
We cannot draw accurate conclusions from the renderings as these can be very different from the physical car that will be unveiled at pre-season testing. Furthermore, the teams can darken the most interesting areas to avoid giving any secrets away to their competitors. However, we can play spot the difference, which gives us a guide to the areas of development that Haas have been focusing on for 2020.
